The Visva Bharati University which is the university of Rabindrannath Tagore in Bolpur in West Bengal’s Birbhum district following a protest by students, the varsity administration on Monday stated that the losses incurred will be compensated from the vandals, along with being booked immediately .
In day-long developments at Visva Bharati University, vandalised by a mob of outsiders, the police filed a case against a Trinamool MLA who was spotted in the 200-strong crowd that pulled down decorative gates of the varsity in the most shocking manner ever seen on campus.
Eight people have so far been arrested in connection with the incident, Birbhum Superintendent of Police Shyam Singh said.,
but according to the report they were only arrested for two days and there has been no action against the Trinamool MLA or others associated with the party who are named in the First Information Report. It was also said that the people who made the vadersity were from the “Poush parban Bachao committee ”
Despite an application to the SDO for imposing of Section 144 CrPC in the specified area around the Mela Ground, no action has been taken. If Section 144 CrPC was imposed, vandalism may have been avoided,” the statement added.
The committee has asked for more protection from the government.
Governor Jagdeep Dhankar wrote to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee that evening, calling the violence at Visva Bharati incident “unprecedented vandalism”.
“Every society draws a red line between the right and wrong: a wrong must be recognised, punished and seen that it does not recur,” he wrote.Furthermore, the university administration stated that it is shutting down indefinitely.
